2024 Asset Lifecycle Management Sustainability Update
Iron Mountain’s Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM) business is committed to driving sustainability by helping organisations adopt responsible, circular IT practices. Through secure and compliant lifecycle management, we maximise reuse and refurbishment, extend hardware lifespans, and significantly reduce embodied carbon emissions.

In 2025, global e-waste reached 62 million metric tonnes, yet only 22.3% was formally recycled, leaving valuable materials lost and environmental risks rising. As an IT asset disposition (ITAD) provider, we recognise the critical role we play in addressing this challenge. With IT hardware contributing significantly to the ICT sector’s 1.7–3% share of global greenhouse gas emissions, our mission extends beyond secure asset management — it’s about driving sustainable change. This report details how we align our own operations with global efforts to close the widening e-waste gap.
We are optimistic about the future and the possibilities it offers to create meaningful, sustainable solutions. Our commitment to a more sustainable tomorrow remains strong, and we will keep focusing on supporting our customers in reaching their sustainability objectives.
About Asset Lifecycle Management
As part of Iron Mountain, a global leader in secure asset management trusted by over 95% of the Fortune 1000 for more than 70 years, Iron Mountain Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM) delivers secure, sustainable hardware asset management and IT asset disposition (ITAD) services worldwide. With decades of expertise, we understand the critical need to achieve security, compliance, and environmental responsibility when managing the complete lifecycle of IT assets.
Empowering our customers to transition to circular IT practices, we maximise the reuse and refurbishment of IT equipment wherever possible, extending asset lifespans and reducing embodied carbon emissions. For assets that cannot be reused, we ensure responsible recycling, minimising landfill contribution and maximising recovery of valuable materials.
Enabling a circular economy
At Iron Mountain, we champion the circular economy by helping customers shift from the traditional “take, make, dispose” model to sustainable, circular alternatives. This approach extends the life of IT hardware, cuts carbon emissions and e-waste, and reduces the need for raw material extraction.
To maximise IT asset value, we prioritise secure data erasure and asset redeployment or remarketing, boosting ROI and minimising environmental impact. Remarketing or reuse is up to 20 times less energy intensive than recycling, according to NIST.
When full reuse isn't possible, we harvest and resell valuable components. Remaining materials are responsibly recycled through trusted partners, ensuring valuable resources re-enter the production cycle — effectively closing the loop.
