Global infrastructure and value recovery
A leading platform provider needed to manage the end-of-life cycle for massive hardware refreshes. They required a partner who could handle high-volume recurring shredding while also decommissioning fully populated server racks across a growing data centre footprint.

The challenge
A leading platform provider needed to manage the end-of-life cycle for massive hardware refreshes. They required a partner who could handle high-volume recurring shredding while also decommissioning fully populated server racks across a growing data centre footprint. A key requirement was “Total Liability Transfer”— ensuring the vendor took legal ownership of all wastes.
The solution
Iron Mountain established a recurring service model involving 2–3 shredding events per week. For large-scale refreshes, we provided “White Glove” rack removal, securely transporting fully populated cabinets to our facility for identification via the online asset tracking portal system. High-value shredded material was then directed to certified smelters for metal recovery.
The result
- Operational consistency: Successfully managing the destruction of up to 6,000 drives in a single day.
- Strong recycling: Maximised resource conservation by implementing a recovery model that ensures gold, platinum, and palladium are recycled and diverted from the waste stream.
- Regulatory shield: Iron Mountain assumes all legal responsibility for the waste, insulating the client from environmental and compliance liabilities.
