Large-scale data centre decommissioning
During a strategic realignment, a major global bank needed to exit four London-based facilities simultaneously. This included a CoLo data centre containing 72 cabinets, 2,000+ assets, and 25 kilometres of cabling.

The challenge
During a strategic realignment, a major global bank needed to exit four London-based facilities simultaneously. This included a CoLo data centre containing 72 cabinets, 2,000+ assets, and 25 kilometers of cabling. The bank faced a strict seven-day deadline to vacate the primary facility while ensuring 100% data security for highly sensitive financial records.
The solution
Iron Mountain delivered a comprehensive ITAD solution including deploying a specialised technical team to strip all cabling and cabinets within a strict one-week window. Reusable assets were securely redeployed via “White Glove” transport to three new locations, while over 700 sensitive drives were shredded onsite. Additionally, Iron Mountain identified high-value servers for sanitisation and remarketing to maximise value recovery.
The result
- Financial impact: Recovered over $100,000 through strategic asset remarketing, significantly offsetting decommissioning costs.
- Seamless exit: Met the aggressive seven-day deadline, allowing for a clean facility hand-back to the landlord.
- 100% compliance: Provided a serialised audit trail and Certificates of Destruction for all data-bearing assets, satisfying strict financial regulatory requirements.
